Meet Our Caring Clinicians
James R. Smith, PhD
I work with adults of all ages, from students to senior citizens. Prior to becoming a clinical psychologist, I worked in construction and as a teacher and community college administrator in Appalachia.
I received my Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Education degree from the University of Virginia. My PhD in Clinical Psychology is from the University of Illinois. I did my internship at the Boston Veteran’s Administration Medical Center and at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. I worked in several other inpatient settings prior to joining Christie Clinic’s Department of Psychiatry in 1990. The three of us founded Birch Tree Counseling & Consulting LLC in 2003.
I am licensed as a clinical psychologist in Illinois.
Sandra Ferguson, LCSW
When people encounter challenges in life, they can gain a new perspective by talking to a therapist. I help people overcome their obstacles to achieve their personal goals.
I received my bachelor’s degree in Deaf Education from the University of Illinois, and later returned to the university to receive my Master of Social Work degree. My internship was at the V.A. Medical Center in Danville, Illinois, where I worked primarily in the substance abuse and psychiatric units. I then worked for several years as a clinical therapist at the Piatt County Mental Health Center in Monticello, Illinois, and later in the Psychiatry Department at Christie Clinic in Champaign. My private practice at Birch Tree Counseling & Consulting LLC began in 2003. I am a licensed clinical social worker.

Robert J. Lentz, PhD
The growth afforded by psychotherapy and counseling can be rewarding to both the client and the counselor. It has been an honor and pleasure to work with many people over the years. Although psychotherapy may be uncomfortable at times, the satisfaction of achieving one’s goals exceeds the discomfort.
My B.A. degree in Psychology is from Wabash College. I received my M.A. from Boston University and PhD from the University of Illinois, both in Clinical Psychology. Early in my career, I worked in both residential and outpatient settings and taught graduate and undergraduate classes in psychology at the university. I was a psychologist in Christie Clinic’s Department of Psychiatry for nearly 30 years before founding Birch Tree Counseling with Dr. James R. Smith and Sandra Ferguson in 2003.
I work with individuals - from young adults to seniors - and serve as a consultant to a hospice program (through Presence Covenant Health Center). I have been a licensed clinical psychologist in Illinois since 1974.
Robert J. Boucek Jr., PsyD
Our present moment possibilities can be impacted by past experiences in positive and negative ways. We can uncover unconscious tendencies and experience new ways of being in a therapeutic relationship. Sometimes it is helpful, even necessary, to explore the way we carry our past forward. Especially when we find ourselves feeling and acting in habitual ways that may have once served a protective, adaptive function, but presently constricts life--in terms of how we relate towards ourselves and other people.
I received my B.A. degree from the University of Illinois, majoring in English and Psychology. After working as a counselor in residential treatment settings in Oregon, I returned to graduate school and completed my M.A. and Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology in San Diego. In training (and after licensure), I worked for a variety of non-profits, such as the San Diego LGBT Center (2003-2004), Jewish Family Service of San Diego(2004-2010), and San Diego’s Survivors of Torture, International (2010-2013). I started private practice in 2010 and worked as a staff psychologist at the Student Health and Counseling Services of California State University, San Marcos (2012-2013). I have enjoyed an outpatient practice in Champaign the last four years.
Currently, I work with older adolescents, adults, and with couples. My clinical interests are in mood and anxiety disorders, trauma, substance abuse, attachment and relationship problems, and integrating mindfulness and hypnotic approaches into psychotherapy. I am a licensed clinical psychologist in IL.
